Glass Degree Show

Edinburgh College of Art, 16th to 26th June 2007

Contemporary architectural glass by graduating BA (Hons.)
design student Emma Lindsay

The work I have produced for this show aims to highlight the self-destructive nature of the human race through the vibrancy and intensity of traditional stained glass. Inspired by the story of Easter Island (a tiny isolated land mass in the middle of the South Pacific) and the seemingly suicidal actions of its inhabitants. The three large freestanding glass panels are intended to evoke a sense of drama and theatre by contrasting areas of brilliant light and vibrant colour with thick black abstract painting effects. The imagery is also abstract in nature as it aims to give a sense of chaos and destruction, rather than a literal picture. My work is intended to evoke the raw passion and primeval energy that I see in other forms of artwork. To achieve this I have chosen to use bold colour and a variety of textures, which have been achieved by carving into and layering the glass. The colours in the glass I have used are uneven and the surface is jagged and rough, which further enhances the aggressiveness I wish to show and challenges the traditional way in which stained glass is perceived.
